The only way to get financial aid is to be eligible. Watch this video to see how understanding the college financial aid process makes all the difference in the world.
It is a well known fact that each and every year there are literally billions of dollars in college financial aid that is made available for students. What isn’t known is how to get your fair share. Parents and students miss out on the free money the government and colleges give away in the form of student financial aid because they aren’t familiar with the college financial aid process.
Get to know College Financial Aid 101
There are four sources for financial aid:
The Federal Government- offers about 60% of the aid available
State and Local Government- offers about 15% of the aid available
Colleges’ and Universities’ own sources- offers about 23% of the aid available
Private Scholarships- less than 2% of the aid available
Understand first, that the Cost of Attendance or COA is the amount of money it will ultimately take to attend a college or university. This includes tuition, fees, books, room and board, etc. Everything it takes for a student to attend school.
Here are a few kinds of college financial aid that the federal, state and local governments, along with the colleges and universities offer… if you know how to get it.
College financial aid comes in a few categories:
The first kind of college financial aid is called, “Self Help“. Self help is money that is made available for parents and students to borrow for the cost of attending (COA) college.
Although not the most popular kind of aid one can get, Self Help are loans for those people who haven’t saved enough to pay for college. Because it is considered Cheap Money that you borrow, it might be a good alternative to going to a bank and getting a consumer loan.
The second and obviously more popular kind of college financial aid is called, “Free Money“. Free money is just what it implies…Money that the student doesn’t have to pay back. It comes in the form of college grants, college scholarships and tuition discounts , to name a few.
Tuition discounts are reductions for tuition only.It is sort of a bargain sale on the tuition but you must know how to get them or you’ll never hear a college even discuss it. Just by merely mentioning a tuition discount will not get you money off the COA. You need to know the procedure before you apply.
The Art Of Getting College Financial Aid
What most people don’t realize, is that receiving your fair share of college financial aid is an art. As you read through this website, it will become clear that it is such an art that most people really don’t know what or how to get all that they deserve. If you show me two families with identical incomes, assets, homes, number and age of family members, etc. I can show you two different Expected Family Contributions (EFC’s).
The reason for having two totally different EFCs for each of our hypothetical families, is that one family will blindly fill out the financial aid forms not knowing the process and the other family will have done their homework and understand what needs to be accomplished before the forms are filed and then doesn’t make any mistakes.
There is no data available on how much college financial aid is left on the table in the form of college grants and college scholarships but I can tell you this: I have never seen a family yet who didn’t do something wrong and miss out on free money. It happens every year. Millions of student aid dollars are not receicved that could have been given away had the process of college financial aid been thoroughly understood. That is a fact.
Not Receiving Your Student Financial Aid Is More Costly Than Doing Your Taxes Wrong
Imagine this: It is April 1 and Tax Day is 14 days away. You paid your share in taxes the previous year and you really expect to get a large check back from the IRS. Would you just fill out the tax form and send it in not really knowing all of your deductions or which forms you really needed? Of course you wouldn’t!
Well the same is true here except for the fact that this could be 2, 3 or 4 times OR EVEVN MORE than the amount you would get back from the IRS… AND it is for 4 years in a row! And another thing… unlike the IRS, the schools don’t tell you that you made a mistake on your form and that you are entitled to more aid, they only tell you when you make a mistake and that you are getting less money.
The Early Bird…Gets the Aid
Probably the least known fact about receiving college financial aid is that college financial aid is given out on a first-come, first-served basis. “No big deal,” you say. Well, if there is just one little mistake on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form-(FAFSA)- or other financial aid form, you get bumped. That means you go to the back of the line and once aid is gone, it’s gone.
Picture just one of the college financial aid officers at one of the colleges that you applied to with 450 aid applications sitting on his desk and your form is on the bottom or worse yet, it hasn’t been processed because you were late getting it in or maybe made a mistake and had to re-do it…Need I say more. Again, once the free money aid is gone, it’s gone and you’ll end up with the scraps.
